Our Yellow Fire Shrimp are bred and raised right here at Legacy Line Aquatics. From tiny shrimplets to sale size, they grow in our own freshwater systems, where we observe their development, activity, and feeding.

Their bright yellow coloration adds a cheerful contrast to green plants, dark substrate, and natural driftwood. These peaceful dwarf shrimp spend much of their time exploring moss, leaves, and aquarium surfaces while grazing on biofilm and soft algae.

They are an enjoyable choice for an established planted aquarium or a dedicated shrimp colony.

Yellow intensity and coverage vary with age, sex, genetics, and condition. Some individuals develop a lighter stripe along the back, but a particular stripe pattern is not guaranteed.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Yellow Fire Shrimp are peaceful grazers that spend much of the day picking food from aquarium surfaces. A group provides more visible activity and a better opportunity to establish a breeding colony.

Freshly molted shrimp may hide while their new exoskeleton hardens. Moss, plants, and sheltered spaces provide places to rest safely.

An empty, translucent molt is normal and should not automatically be mistaken for a dead shrimp. Healthy molts can usually remain in the aquarium for the shrimp to graze on.

Feeding

Provide an established aquarium with biofilm and natural grazing surfaces, supplemented with a balanced shrimp diet.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality complete shrimp pellets
  • Small portions of algae or vegetable wafers
  • Shrimp-safe foods containing spirulina
  • Blanched zucchini or spinach
  • Occasional protein-containing shrimp foods
  • Biofilm growing on aquarium-safe leaves, wood, plants, and filter sponges

Feed small amounts according to colony size and available natural food. Remove uneaten supplemental food before it spoils.

Yellow Fire Shrimp help graze aquarium surfaces, but they do not replace regular maintenance or a balanced feeding routine.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Use a fully cycled, established aquarium with plenty of grazing surfaces. Moss, live plants, driftwood, and aquarium-safe leaf litter provide shelter and surfaces for biofilm growth.

Use sponge filtration or a properly fitted intake sponge to help protect shrimplets.

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Other Yellow Fire Shrimp
  • Peaceful aquarium snails
  • Amano shrimp, with adequate food and space
  • Otocinclus in an appropriately established aquarium
  • Small, gentle fish when some shrimplet losses are acceptable

A shrimp-only aquarium is the best choice for maximum breeding success. Even small, peaceful fish may eat baby shrimp.

Avoid

  • Puffers
  • Predatory or aggressive fish
  • Most cichlids
  • Crayfish and predatory freshwater prawns
  • Unprotected filter intakes
  • Copper-based medications and treatments labeled unsafe for shrimp
  • Plants exposed to shrimp-toxic pesticides
  • Sudden changes in temperature, hardness, or TDS
  • Overfeeding and accumulated waste
