The Venezuelan Red Sailfin Cory brings warm orange-red accents, a contrasting dark body patch, and lively bottom-level activity to a peaceful freshwater aquarium. Commonly sold as the Venezuelan or Orange Venezuelan Cory, this small catfish is an appealing choice for hobbyists looking for something beyond the usual bronze or albino Cory.

These social fish are best enjoyed in groups, where their natural foraging and interactions become part of the aquarium’s everyday activity. Their compact size makes them a good fit for appropriately stocked planted and community aquariums.

Why Hobbyists Love Venezuelan Red Sailfin Corys

  • Warm orange-red coloration with contrasting dark markings
  • Peaceful temperament suited to community aquariums
  • Engaging group behavior
  • Small adult size
  • An attractive bottom-dwelling companion for small schooling fish

Animal Data

These Corys are social bottom dwellers that should not be kept alone. A group provides security and allows customers to observe their natural interactions.

They may rest beneath plants or driftwood between periods of activity. Provide both sheltered areas and open substrate for foraging.

Feeding

Corys need their own meals. They are not algae-control fish and should not be expected to survive on whatever other fish leave behind.

Recommended foods include:

  • Quality sinking Cory or community pellets
  • Omnivore sinking wafers
  • Suitable gel foods
  • Frozen brine shrimp or daphnia
  • Small portions of frozen bloodworms
  • Live baby brine shrimp as supplemental food

Make sure food reaches the bottom and that every fish has access to it.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Provide a mature, fully cycled aquarium with:

  • Fine sand or smooth, rounded substrate
  • Open feeding areas
  • Plants, driftwood, or shaded resting places
  • Good filtration and oxygenation
  • Stable water chemistry
  • Zero ammonia and nitrite
  • Regular maintenance to prevent waste accumulation

Soft to moderately hard water is a practical target. Ask us about the current holding parameters before purchasing if your water is especially hard or alkaline.

Tank Size Recommended

  • Small group of six: 20 gallon long or larger
  • Larger group or mixed community: 29–40 gallons or larger, depending on total stocking
  • Prioritize usable bottom area rather than tank height alone

Water Temperature

  • Recommended range: 72–78°F
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes
  • Choose tankmates comfortable within the same temperature range

Tank Mates

Good Choices

  • Ember tetras
  • Other peaceful, similarly sized tetras
  • Small rasboras
  • Peaceful gouramis
  • Other nonaggressive community fish with compatible requirements

Avoid

  • Aggressive or predatory cichlids
  • Fish large enough to swallow or injure them
  • Keeping a single Cory without companions
  • Crowded bottom-dwelling communities
  • Relying on algae or scraps as their diet
  • Newly established, uncycled aquariums
