Our Snowball Shrimp are bred and raised right here at Legacy Line Aquatics. We raise them from tiny shrimplets in our own freshwater systems, observing their growth, activity, and feeding before offering them for sale.

These peaceful dwarf shrimp have a translucent to milky-white appearance that stands out against dark substrate, green moss, and natural aquarium décor. Their name comes from the distinctive white eggs carried beneath a berried female’s abdomen, resembling a small cluster of snowballs.

They spend their time exploring plants, wood, and other surfaces while grazing on biofilm and food.

Body opacity varies between individuals. Snowball Shrimp are not necessarily solid, opaque white, and younger shrimp may appear especially translucent.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Snowball Shrimp are peaceful grazers that explore aquarium surfaces throughout the day. Their pale bodies make their movements especially noticeable against darker backgrounds.

Provide plants, moss, and sheltered spaces for newly molted shrimp. Temporary hiding around a molt is normal, and an empty translucent shell should not automatically be mistaken for a dead shrimp.

A dedicated colony allows their feeding and breeding behavior to be observed without pressure from fish.

Feeding

Provide a mature aquarium with established biofilm, supplemented with a varied shrimp diet.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality complete shrimp pellets
  • Small portions of algae or vegetable wafers
  • Shrimp-safe foods containing spirulina
  • Blanched zucchini or spinach
  • Occasional protein-containing shrimp foods
  • Biofilm growing on aquarium-safe leaves, wood, moss, and filter sponges

Adjust feeding to the colony’s size and available natural food. Remove uneaten supplemental food before it spoils.

A newly cycled aquarium may not yet contain enough natural grazing food. Snowball Shrimp benefit from an established environment and deliberate feeding.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Use a fully cycled, established aquarium with gentle filtration and plenty of grazing surfaces. Live plants, moss, driftwood, and aquarium-safe leaf litter provide shelter and surfaces for biofilm growth.

Protect filter intakes with a suitable sponge or use a sponge filter.

These are general care guidelines, rather than a statement of our current holding water. Maintain stable conditions and introduce changes gradually. TDS alone does not indicate whether the mineral balance is suitable.

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Other Snowball Shrimp
  • Peaceful aquarium snails
  • Amano shrimp, with adequate food and space
  • Otocinclus in an appropriately established aquarium
  • Small, gentle fish when some shrimplet losses are acceptable

For the strongest colony growth, maintain them without fish. Dense cover reduces predation but does not guarantee baby shrimp will survive.

Avoid

  • Puffers
  • Predatory or aggressive fish
  • Most cichlids
  • Crayfish and predatory freshwater prawns
  • Unprotected filter intakes
  • Copper-based medications and treatments labeled unsafe for shrimp
  • Plants exposed to shrimp-toxic pesticides
  • Abrupt changes in temperature, hardness, or TDS
  • Overfeeding and deteriorating water quality
