The Senga Bay Red Empress is a geographic form of Protomelas taeniolatus originating from the Senga Bay region of Lake Malawi. Mature males combine a metallic blue face and head with vivid red/orange coloration across the body, producing one of the most recognizable color combinations among Malawi haps.

Females and juveniles are normally silver/gray to brown with dark horizontal markings. Males gain their strongest color as they mature and establish social dominance. Good nutrition, clean water, sufficient space, and the presence of females all contribute to their adult display.

Because Senga Bay is a named geographic line, it should be maintained and sold separately from other Red Empress localities. This is an excellent choice for hobbyists who value both strong coloration and documented provenance.

Temperament & Behavior

Senga Bay Red Empress are active, open-water cichlids that are typically less combative than many aggressive Malawi haps. Mature males nevertheless establish breeding territories and may chase females or competing males.

A breeding group should normally contain one male with several females so that attention is distributed throughout the group. Multiple males require a larger aquarium, broken lines of sight, and careful observation.

Females are maternal mouthbrooders. After spawning, the female carries the eggs and developing fry in her mouth until they are ready to be released.

Feeding

In nature, Red Empress forage around rock-and-sand transition zones for algae, small invertebrates, and edible organic material. In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied omnivorous diet. Avoid overfeeding and excessive use of fatty or extremely rich foods.
