L104 Clown Pleco
L104 Clown Pleco
L104 Clown Plecos, also commonly called Clown Plecs, are one of the most popular dwarf plecos in the aquarium hobby. They are known for their bold striped pattern, smaller adult size, and peaceful nature compared to many larger pleco species. This is a wood-eating pleco in the genus Panaqolus, and it does best in a warm, well-oxygenated aquarium with driftwood, hiding places, and stable water quality. Adult size is typically around 3.5 inches, making them a much more practical option for many home aquariums than larger pleco species.
At Legacy Line Aquatics, these fish are raised in a small-scale, care-first setup. My focus is on healthy fish, clean systems, proper nutrition, and attentive day-to-day care, so you receive fish I’d be confident keeping in my own fish room.
Why Hobbyists Love L104 Clown Plecos
- Beautiful striped pattern that stands out in the aquarium
- Smaller adult size than many common plecos
- Peaceful overall temperament
- Great option for smaller tropical freshwater aquariums
- Unique pleco with plenty of personality and interesting bottom-dwelling behavior
Temperament & Behavior
L104 Clown Plecos are generally peaceful community plecos, but they can become territorial with others of their own kind or with similar bottom-dwelling fish if kept in cramped quarters. They spend much of their time resting on wood, hiding under cover, exploring caves, and grazing surfaces. This species naturally associates with root tangles and wood in the wild, so they do best when the aquarium provides similar structure and shaded refuge.
They do best in tanks with:
- Plenty of driftwood or bogwood
- Caves and shaded hiding places
- Stable water quality and temperature
- Good oxygenation and water movement
- Smooth hardscape and adequate bottom space
Tank Size (Recommended)
- Single fish: 20 gallons recommended for long-term care
- Small peaceful community setup: 20 long / 29 gallon+ preferred
- Multiple plecos or heavier bottom-dweller stocking: larger tanks strongly recommended to reduce territorial stress
Water Temperature
- Ideal range: 75–82°F
- Stable warm water is more important than chasing an exact number
Tank Mates (Good Choices)
Best tank mates are peaceful tropical fish that will not constantly harass them or compete too heavily for the same bottom territory and caves.
Good tank mates may include:
- Peaceful midwater community fish
- Corydoras in properly planned setup
- some rainbowfish in larger aquariums
- Other calm tropical fish with similar care requirements
Avoid:
- Large aggressive cichlids
- Overly boisterous bottom dwellers
- Cramped setups with multiple plecos competing for the same caves
- Rough fish that constantly disturb resting areas
Feeding
L104 Clown Plecos are wood-eaters and must have driftwood or bogwood in the aquarium. They should not be treated as simple algae cleaners. In addition to wood, they do best with a varied diet of quality sinking foods and vegetable matter. Reliable care sources specifically note bogwood as essential and recommend foods such as algae wafers, catfish pellets, gel foods, fresh vegetables, and some frozen foods.
Recommended foods:
- High-quality sinking pellets and wafers
- Driftwood or bogwood for constant grazing
- Algae wafers
- Vegetables such as zucchini, squash, cucumber, or sweet potato
- Occasional frozen foods in moderation
