Kuhli Loaches are peaceful, eel-shaped bottom dwellers known for their striped patterns, secretive personalities, and unusual movement. They spend much of the day resting beneath wood, leaves, plants, and caves before becoming more active during feeding or after the lights dim.

These fish are wild-caught and may contain different closely related forms.

Banding, body color, adult size, and pattern placement may vary among individuals.

Temperament & Behavior

Kuhli Loaches are social but not conventional schooling fish. They become more confident when several are maintained together. A newly introduced Kuhli may remain hidden for days or weeks before settling in.

The aquarium must have a tight-fitting lid, protected filter intakes, and no gaps through which the loaches can enter filtration equipment.

Feeding

Kuhlis need food that reaches the bottom, preferably offered near or shortly after lights-out.

Recommended foods:

  • Small sinking pellets
  • Quality bottom-feeder wafers
  • Frozen bloodworms
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Small worms and insect-based foods

 
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Use smooth sand or fine rounded substrate. Provide leaf litter, caves, wood, plants, and shaded hiding areas. Sharp gravel can damage their delicate bodies and barbels.

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Small peaceful tetras
  • Rasboras
  • Corydoras
  • Peaceful gouramis
  • Small rainbowfish
  • Peaceful dwarf cichlids
  • Adult shrimp, with no guarantee for tiny shrimplets

Avoid:

  • Large predatory fish
  • Aggressive cichlids
  • Snail-eating puffers
  • Sharp or jagged substrate
  • Unprotected filter intakes
  • Full-strength medication without confirming that it is safe for loaches
