Java Fern
Java Fern is one of the most dependable live plants in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Its durable green leaves, low light requirements, and ability to grow without injected CO₂ make it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced aquarists.
Java Fern grows from a horizontal rhizome rather than conventional buried roots. It should be attached to driftwood, rock, or decoration, or positioned with the rhizome resting above the substrate. Burying the rhizome can cause it to rot.
Why Hobbyists Love Java Fern
- Does not require injected CO₂
- Tolerates low-to-moderate lighting
- Excellent for driftwood and rock
- Durable leaves
- Suitable for many community and cichlid aquariums
- Produces new plants from mature leaves and rhizomes
What You’re Getting from Legacy Line Aquatics
- One Java Fern rhizome unless otherwise stated
- Plant inspected for overall condition before sale
- Natural variation in height, leaf count, and leaf shape
- A live aquarium plant rather than a sterile tissue-culture specimen
Growth & Care
Java Fern grows slowly but steadily once established. Mature leaves may develop dark dots or small plantlets; these can be part of normal reproduction rather than disease.
Lighting & Nutrition
Low-to-moderate light is sufficient. Because the rhizome is not buried, Java Fern benefits primarily from a complete water-column fertilizer.
Placement & Planting
Attach the plant to rock or wood using thread, fishing line, or a small amount of aquarium-safe cyanoacrylate gel. Keep the rhizome uncovered.
Good Uses
- Low-tech planted aquariums
- Shrimp tanks
- Community tanks
- Breeding tanks
- Driftwood-centered aquascapes
- Many cichlid aquariums
Avoid:
- Burying the rhizome
- Extremely intense light without nutrient balance
- Allowing algae to cover slow-growing leaves
- Expecting rapid growth immediately after planting
