Siz/Sex

Cassingham’s Cherry Bomb is our trade name for the red hybrid peacock cichlid. Yes, we breed these, but the line was developed by Daniel Cassingham. This aquarium-developed line offers hobbyists a distinctive addition to a larger African cichlid aquarium while recognizing the breeder behind its development.

Cherry Bombs are sold as hybrid peacock cichlids. They do not represent a naturally occurring Lake Malawi species or collection locality.

Color develops as fish mature and can vary with sex, individual genetics and social position. Juveniles should not be expected to display the same coloration as a mature male. Actual-fish and parent photographs, when identified as such, help show both the available fish and the line’s potential.

Why Hobbyists Love Cassingham’s Cherry Bomb

  • A distinctive red-focused hybrid peacock line
  • Breeder recognition built into the name
  • The opportunity to watch juvenile color develop
  • Active behavior and territorial displays
  • An interesting addition to a carefully planned African cichlid aquarium

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Plan for typical peacock cichlid territorial behavior. Mature males may defend space, display toward rivals and persistently court females. Provide visual barriers and watch for fish being excluded from food or shelter.

Color intensity can change with social position. A subordinate fish may show less color than a dominant individual, so subdued coloration alone does not establish sex.

Breeding & Line Management

Peacock cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying developing eggs and fry in their mouths.

To maintain this line, use a dedicated breeding setup with documented stock from the same line. Keep breeding females separate from unrelated peacocks, haps and other hybrids, and retain records identifying parents and offspring.

Offspring from an unplanned community spawning should not be sold as confirmed Cassingham’s Cherry Bombs. A trade name does not establish parentage.

Feeding

Use an appropriately sized, quality pellet formulated for peacock cichlids or similar omnivorous/carnivorous African cichlids as the main diet. Offer variety without overfeeding.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality peacock or hap pellets
  • Spirulina-containing pellets or flakes
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp
  • Live baby brine shrimp for juveniles

Feed manageable portions and verify that subordinate fish receive food.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Provide:

  • Fine sand or smooth substrate
  • Open swimming space
  • Secure rockwork and visual barriers
  • Sheltered areas for less dominant fish
  • Established biological filtration
  • Strong aeration
  • Consistent water changes

Tank Size (Recommended)

A 75-gallon aquarium or larger is a practical starting point for a mixed adult display. Larger groups or multiple territorial males may require substantially more space.

Dedicated breeding setups should be planned around the line’s actual adult size and behavior, with space available to separate a harassed fish.

Water Temperature

Maintain approximately 76–80°F with stable water chemistry. Monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and adjust maintenance to stocking and feeding levels.

Tank Mates

Potential companions include similarly sized peacocks, compatible Malawi haps and appropriately sized Synodontis catfish. Compatibility depends on the individual fish, aquarium layout and stocking.

Avoid:

  • Highly aggressive mbuna
  • Oversized predatory cichlids
  • Small fish that could be swallowed
  • Delicate community fish
  • Unrelated breeding females when preserving this line

Monitor every introduction and be prepared to separate incompatible fish.
