Size/Sex

The Blueberry OB Fryeri is a premium designer strain combining the sleek body and electric blue influence of Fryeri with the unpredictable blotched patterning associated with OB African cichlids. Individual fish may develop combinations of berry blue, dark navy or black, cream, white, yellow, orange, or pink.

This is an aquarium created, selectively line bred strain rather than a naturally occurring Lake Malawi locality. Pattern placement, background color, and the amount of blue will vary from fish to fish. Males generally develop stronger blue tones and more intense coloration as they mature, while females are often lighter or more subdued.

The result is a bold, powerful looking hap in which no two adults are exactly alike. Blueberry Fryeri are especially well suited to hobbyists who enjoy raising juveniles and watching their final patterns develop.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Blueberry OB Fryeri are confident, active Malawi haps. Mature males may become territorial and persistent during breeding, particularly when space is limited. They are generally best maintained as one male with several females in a dedicated breeding group.

Females are maternal mouthbrooders and carry developing eggs and fry in their mouths. Color and pattern can vary significantly among offspring, and siblings should not be expected to look identical.

If the goal is to maintain this designer line, avoid mixing Blueberry females with standard Fryeri, other OB Fryeri, peacocks, or unrelated designer strains.

Feeding

Blueberry OB Fryeri appreciate a protein-forward but balanced Malawi cichlid diet. Prepared pellets should remain the foundation, with frozen foods used for variety and conditioning. Feeder fish, mammalian meat, and excessive rich foods are unnecessary and may create health problems.

Recommended foods:

  • Premium pellets formulated for Malawi haps
  • Quality krill- or fish-based pellets
  • Spirulina-containing pellets or flakes
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Chopped krill
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Fine sand or smooth substrate
  • Large areas of open swimming space
  • Rock clusters and visual barriers
  • Sheltered areas for females
  • Strong filtration and high oxygen levels
  • Stable alkaline water with a pH around 7.6–8.6
  • Moderate-to-hard water

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Dedicated one-male breeding group: 40-gallon breeder minimum
  • Adult display aquarium: 55 gallons or larger
  • Mixed peacock and hap community: 75 gallons or larger preferred
  • Large multi-male community: 90–125 gallons or larger

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 76–82°F
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry
  • Maintain low nitrate through consistent water changes

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Choose robust, similarly sized Malawi fish that will not be easily intimidated or excessively aggressive.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Senga Bay Red Empress
  • Star Sapphire Cichlids
  • Compatible Aulonocara peacocks
  • Copadichromis
  • Other moderately tempered Malawi haps
  • Appropriately sized Synodontis catfish

Avoid:

  • Hyper-aggressive mbuna
  • Extremely aggressive or oversized predatory haps
  • Fish small enough to be swallowed
  • Delicate community fish
  • Standard Fryeri or unrelated OB lines in a breeding setup
  • Other peacock females when maintaining the Blueberry line
