Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Koi Ricefish are peaceful, active schooling fish that do best in groups. They are constantly on the move, especially near the upper levels of the aquarium, and they do very well in planted tanks or other setups with open swimming space and cover. They are generally easygoing and make an excellent choice for peaceful community tanks with similarly calm species.

Feeding

Koi Ricefish thrive on a varied diet. A rotation of quality foods helps support color, growth, breeding condition, and overall health.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality micro pellets and flakes
  • Live baby brine shrimp
  • Frozen foods in moderation
  • Other appropriately sized live or prepared foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Stable water quality and temperature
  • Open swimming space
  • Live plants or cover
  • Gentle to moderate flow
  • A lid or covered setup for safety

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Small group: 10 gallons minimum
  • Better long-term setup: 15 gallons+
  • Larger colony or breeding setup: 20 gallons+ preferred

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 72–78°F
  • Many hobbyists keep them around 74–77°F
  • Stable temperature is more important than chasing an exact number

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are other peaceful fish that will not harass them or outcompete them too aggressively.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Other peaceful ricefish
  • Small peaceful rasboras
  • Small rainbowfish in appropriate setups
  • Peaceful shrimp and snails
  • Other calm community fish with similar care requirements

Avoid:

  • Aggressive fish
  • Large predatory fish
  • Fin nippers
  • Overly boisterous tank mates in smaller setups
