Super Red Kribensis are a selectively bred color strain of Pelvicachromis pulcher. They retain the manageable size, adaptability, and fascinating parental behavior of traditional Kribensis while producing substantially stronger red and purple coloration.

Females generally display the most intense belly coloration, while males grow larger and develop longer, more pointed fins. Their recognizable name and premium coloration make them appealing to both newer fishkeepers and experienced dwarf-cichlid hobbyists.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Super Red Kribensis are intelligent, active dwarf cichlids. They are generally manageable outside of breeding periods but can become strongly territorial after forming a pair, choosing a cave, or beginning to protect fry.

Both parents participate in raising the fry, making them an especially rewarding species to observe.

Feeding

These fish thrive on a varied omnivorous diet. A rotation of prepared, frozen, and live foods helps support coloration, conditioning, and breeding response.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality dwarf-cichlid pellets
  • Small sinking pellets
  • Quality flakes
  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Frozen daphnia and mysis shrimp
  • Frozen bloodworms as treats
  • Live baby brine shrimp

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Fine sand or smooth substrate
  • Several separate caves
  • Driftwood and plants
  • Visual barriers
  • Gentle to moderate flow
  • Stable water around pH 6.0–8.0

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Single compatible pair: 20-gallon long recommended
  • Community setup: 29 gallons or larger preferred
  • Multiple Kribensis: 40-gallon breeder or larger with separated territories, although aggression must still be monitored

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 75–82°F
  • A stable temperature is more important than chasing one exact number

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful but reasonably quick fish that primarily occupy the middle and upper portions of the aquarium.

Good tank mates may include:

Peaceful schooling fish:

  • Harlequin Rasboras
  • Cherry Barbs
  • Larger peaceful tetras
  • Danios
  • Smaller Rainbowfish

Peaceful livebearers:

  • Platies
  • Swordtails
  • Endlers in sufficiently spacious setups

Avoid:

  • Other cave-spawning cichlids in smaller aquariums
  • Hyper-aggressive bottom dwellers
  • Slow, long-finned fish
  • Tiny shrimp
  • Fish that constantly enter their breeding cave
  • Crowded community setups
