Star Sapphire (Placidochromis sp. “phenochilus Tanzania”)
The Star Sapphire Cichlid is one of Lake Malawi’s most rewarding fish to raise. Mature males develop a deep sapphire-blue base covered with scattered white and turquoise reflective scales, often called “chips” that make every adult look completely unique.
This spectacular pattern develops gradually. Juveniles and younger males may be mostly blue or silver-blue, and the number and placement of chips will vary between individuals. Mature coloration can take several years to fully develop, making the transformation part of the appeal of this exceptional hap.
Despite their impressive adult size, Star Sapphires are generally calmer than many large Malawi cichlids. They do best in spacious aquariums with open sand, strong filtration, and carefully selected tank mates.
