Red-Spotted Nerite Snails combine useful algae-grazing behavior with attractive, naturally variable shell patterns. Depending on the individual, the shell may display red, orange, brown, black, or contrasting spotted markings.

Nerites do not normally establish self-sustaining populations in a freshwater aquarium. Females may deposit small white egg capsules on hard surfaces, but the larvae generally require different conditions to complete development.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Nerites spend much of their time grazing glass, stones, driftwood, and aquarium decorations. They may occasionally climb above the waterline, making a secure lid advisable.

Feeding

A mature aquarium containing algae and biofilm is important. A spotless new tank may not contain enough natural food.

Supplemental foods may include:

  • Quality algae wafers
  • Repashy-style grazing foods
  • Blanched zucchini
  • Blanched green beans
  • Other invertebrate-safe vegetable foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Mineral-rich water helps maintain shell strength. Chronically acidic water may contribute to shell erosion.

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Peaceful community fish
  • Tetras and rasboras
  • Corydoras
  • Peaceful livebearers
  • Freshwater shrimp
  • Other non-predatory snails

Avoid:

  • Pufferfish
  • Snail-eating loaches
  • Assassin Snails
  • Large aggressive cichlids
  • Copper-based medications
  • Very soft, acidic water
  • Adding them to an immature aquarium without an established food supply
