Rainbow Cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa)

Rainbow Cichlids are one of the most underrated freshwater cichlids in the hobby. Known for their warm mix of yellow, gold, orange, and soft blue-green tones, they are a colorful and personable species that stays manageable in size compared to many other Central American cichlids. They are especially appreciated for offering classic cichlid behavior without the extreme aggression seen in many larger relatives.

At Legacy Line Aquatics, these fish are bred and raised in-house by me in a small-scale, care-first setup. I do not source from mass-production fish farms. My focus is on raising healthy fish with clean water, proper nutrition, and attentive day-to-day care, so you receive fish I’d be confident keeping in my own fish room.

Why Hobbyists Love Rainbow Cichlids

  • Beautiful rainbow-like coloration that intensifies with mood, maturity, and breeding condition
  • Peaceful to semi-peaceful temperament by cichlid standards
  • Great personality without the excessive aggression of many larger Central American cichlids
  • Manageable adult size for medium-sized aquariums
  • Excellent option for hobbyists wanting a colorful “wet pet” with pair bonding and parental behavior

Temperament & Behavior

Rainbow Cichlids are generally considered peaceful to semi-peaceful cichlids, especially compared to many other Central American species. They can do well in community-style setups with the right tank mates, but like most cichlids, they may become more territorial once mature or when spawning and guarding eggs or fry.

They do best in tanks with:

  • Structure and line-of-sight breaks from driftwood, rockwork, and décor
  • Open swimming space
  • Gentle to moderate flow
  • Stable water quality and temperature
  • Caves, sheltered areas, and spawning surfaces

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Pair (long term): 30 gallons+ recommended
  • Community setup: 40 breeder / 55 gallon+ preferred
  • Multiple fish or pairs: larger tanks strongly recommended with extra territory breaks to reduce aggression

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 75–82°F
  • Many hobbyists keep them around 76–80°F
  • Stability is more important than chasing an exact number

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful to semi-peaceful fish that are sturdy enough to live with a cichlid but not overly aggressive.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Corydoras in appropriately peaceful setups
  • Larger tetras
  • Peaceful rainbowfish
  • Bristlenose plecos
  • Other calm, similarly sized community fish with compatible temperament

Avoid:

  • Highly aggressive cichlids
  • Fin-nippers
  • Very tiny fish that may be bullied or outcompeted
  • Overly boisterous fish that constantly stress them

Feeding

Rainbow Cichlids thrive on a varied omnivorous diet. A rotation of quality foods helps with color, growth, body condition, and overall health. They benefit from both protein foods and some vegetable matter.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality cichlid flakes and pellets
  • Frozen foods (brine shrimp, mysis, bloodworms as treats)
  • Live foods (optional, but excellent for conditioning)
  • Vegetable-based foods or spirulina-based foods as part of a balanced diet

What You’re Getting from Legacy Line Aquatics

When you purchase from me, you’re getting fish that were bred and raised in-house, not mass-imported and flipped. I take a small-scale approach so I can focus on:

  • Fish health
  • Clean systems
  • Proper feeding, including quality pellets/flakes, live baby brine shrimp, frozen foods, and other quality foods
  • Careful day-to-day observation
  • Strong overall condition

That matters—especially with cichlids.
