Nyererei Cichlids are colorful Lake Victoria cichlids best known for the dramatic appearance of mature males. Depending on the geographic population, dominant males can display combinations of red, orange, yellow, blue, and black vertical barring. Females and juveniles are considerably more subdued.

Coloration varies between geographic populations. A locality name should only be added to the product title when your breeder or supplier has provided reliable documentation.

Why Hobbyists Love Nyererei Cichlids

  • Exceptional mature male coloration
  • Active and confident behavior
  • Maternal mouthbrooding reproduction
  • Less commonly available than typical Malawi cichlids
  • Excellent species for a dedicated breeding colony

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Nyererei Cichlids are territorial African cichlids. Mature males can be especially aggressive toward other males and should normally be maintained with several females rather than as a pair.

Females are maternal mouthbrooders and carry the developing eggs and fry in their mouths. Male coloration becomes most intense with maturity, good conditioning, and an appropriate social structure.

Feeding

These fish are omnivorous and should receive a balanced diet containing quality prepared foods, some plant matter, and moderate amounts of appropriate frozen foods.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality African-cichlid pellets
  • Spirulina-containing flakes or pellets
  • Insect-based foods
  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Krill in moderation
  • Live foods occasionally
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Stable rock formations
  • Numerous hiding places
  • Broken lines of sight
  • Open swimming space
  • Fine sand
  • Strong filtration and high oxygen
  • Hard, alkaline water around pH 7.5–8.5

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Breeding group of one male with several females: 55 gallons minimum
  • Larger breeding colony: 75 gallons or larger preferred
  • Mixed African cichlid community: 75 gallons or larger

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 74–80°F
  • Stable water quality and oxygenation are essential

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

A species-focused breeding group is the safest choice. Mixed communities require robust fish with compatible water and dietary requirements.

Good tank mates may include:

Compatible African cichlids in larger aquariums:

  • Moderately aggressive Lake Victoria cichlids
  • Robust Malawi haps with different coloration
  • Yellow Tail Acei
  • Rusty Cichlids

Compatible catfish:

  • Synodontis lucipinnis
  • Other appropriately sized Synodontis

Avoid:

  • Peaceful community fish
  • Timid Peacock Cichlids
  • Multiple males in cramped quarters
  • Other Pundamilia populations
  • Closely related Victorian cichlids that could hybridize
  • Advertising an undocumented collection locality
