Metae Corys, commonly called Bandit Corys, are peaceful catfish recognized by their bold black eye masks and dark markings along the back toward the tail base.

Their pale bodies and contrasting markings give them a clean, distinctive appearance. In a suitable group, they bring lively foraging activity to the aquarium’s lower level while remaining gentle toward compatible community fish.

Body size, coloration, and marking intensity may vary among individuals.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Metae Corys are social bottom dwellers that spend time foraging and resting together. Keeping a group of their own species encourages confidence and more visible activity.

They use sensitive barbels to locate food along the substrate. Occasional surface air gulps are normal, but frequent gasping may indicate low oxygen or poor water quality.

Feeding

Provide regular meals that reach the aquarium floor. Make sure every fish can feed without being crowded out.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality small sinking pellets
  • Nutritionally complete catfish wafers
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Appropriately sized bloodworms
  • Small worms and insect-based foods

Metae Corys are not algae eaters. Leftovers alone do not provide a dependable, balanced diet.

Breeding

Females attach adhesive eggs to glass, plants, or other suitable surfaces. Adults may consume eggs and fry. A separate rearing setup can improve the survival of offspring.
