Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

L134 Leopard Frog Plecos are generally peaceful toward other aquarium fish. Mature males may become territorial around caves, particularly when breeding. Multiple plecos require separate caves and enough floor space to establish individual territories.

Feeding

L134 Plecos are omnivorous and usually show a stronger preference for protein-rich foods than wood-grazing Panaqolus species. They should not be expected to survive on algae alone.

Recommended foods:

  • Protein-rich sinking pellets
  • High-quality pleco wafers
  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Frozen bloodworms as treats
  • Insect-based sinking foods
  • Occasional vegetable-containing foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Multiple individual pleco caves
  • Driftwood
  • Smooth rocks
  • Shaded resting areas
  • Moderate current
  • Strong oxygenation
  • Stable water around pH 6.0–7.5

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Single specimen: 30 gallons minimum
  • Small breeding group: 40-gallon breeder or larger
  • Community with several bottom dwellers: 55 gallons or larger

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 78–84°F
  • Warm water must remain clean and highly oxygenated

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful species suited to warm, clean water.

Good tank mates may include:

Schooling fish:

  • Cardinal Tetras
  • Rummy Nose Tetras
  • Larger peaceful Rasboras
  • Warm-water Rainbowfish

Cichlids:

  • Angelfish
  • Apistogramma
  • Bolivian Rams
  • Other peaceful dwarf cichlids

Bottom dwellers:

  • Sterbai Cory
  • Peaceful Cory species
  • Smaller nonaggressive plecos when enough caves are provided

Avoid:

  • Large aggressive plecos
  • Hyper-aggressive cichlids
  • Cold-water fish
  • Low oxygen
  • Insufficient cave availability
  • Expecting them to function as dedicated algae cleaners
