Geophagus Sveni are elegant South American cichlids known for shimmering blue-green highlights, reddish-orange markings, and long fin extensions that develop with maturity. Juveniles are more subdued, gradually developing the color and flowing appearance that make adults so impressive.

Their common name, “eartheater” describes their feeding behavior. They take in mouthfuls of fine sand, sift out edible material, and release the remaining grains. Watching a group forage together is one of the most rewarding parts of keeping them.

Sveni are generally peaceful for their size, but they are social cichlids that need a spacious aquarium, compatible companions, and room to establish a hierarchy. Fine sand and excellent water quality are central to their care.

  • Graceful adult fin extensions
  • Fascinating sand-sifting behavior

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Sveni spend much of their time exploring the lower aquarium and sifting sand. They establish social rankings, and a group helps distribute occasional chasing. A lone fish or a small, mismatched group does not provide the same social arrangement.

Pairs may defend a spawning area. Provide visual barriers and monitor any fish that is repeatedly chased or excluded from food.

Their relatively gentle temperament does not make them suitable companions for tiny fish that can be swallowed.

Feeding

These fish search sand for edible particles, but sand itself provides no nutrition. Give them small foods relative to their adult size and distribute food across several areas so every fish can eat.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality small sinking cichlid pellets or granules
  • Insect-based sinking foods
  • Spirulina-containing pellets or flakes for variety
  • Frozen brine shrimp
  • Frozen daphnia or mysis shrimp
  • Live baby brine shrimp, especially for juveniles
  • Occasional bloodworms

Feed modest portions and check that less dominant fish maintain good body condition. Large pellets and feeder fish are unnecessary.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They Do Best in Tanks With

  • A broad area of fine, smooth sand for sifting
  • Substantial open floor space
  • Driftwood and stable rocks that break sight lines
  • Efficient filtration and good oxygenation
  • Regular water changes
  • Moderate circulation with calmer resting areas
  • Plants attached to wood or rocks; rooted plants may be disturbed

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 76–82°F
  • pH: Approximately 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Ammonia and Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Keep nitrate low and avoid abrupt changes in water chemistry

Tank Size Recommended

  • Small juvenile group: A 75-gallon aquarium can serve as temporary grow-out space
  • Six adults: A 125-gallon aquarium with a six-foot footprint is our recommended starting point
  • Adult group with other large fish: More space may be necessary; assess the entire stocking plan

Good Tank Mates May Include

  • Larger peaceful tetras that cannot be swallowed
  • Appropriately sized rainbowfish with overlapping water requirements
  • Angelfish in a spacious aquarium with monitored compatibility
  • Moderately tempered acaras or Severums in larger setups
  • Peaceful plecos when each bottom-dwelling fish receives enough food and shelter

Avoid

  • Sharp gravel or coarse substrate that prevents normal sifting
  • Highly aggressive cichlids
  • Tiny fish or shrimp
  • Fin-nipping tank mates
  • Crowded bottom territories
  • Allowing dominant fish to monopolize feeding
