Neocaridina Fire Red Cherry Shrimp are one of the most popular freshwater shrimp in the hobby. Known for their bright red coloration, active grazing behavior, and usefulness in planted aquariums, they are a favorite among both beginners and experienced hobbyists. Their color stands out beautifully against plants, dark substrate, and natural décor.

At Legacy Line Aquatics, these shrimp are bred and raised in-house by me in a small-scale, care first setup. I do not source from mass-production livestock farms. My focus is on raising healthy livestock with clean water, proper nutrition, and attentive day-to-day care, so you receive shrimp I’d be confident keeping in my own fish room.

Why Hobbyists Love Fire Red Cherry Shrimp

  • Bright red coloration that stands out in planted aquariums
  • Constantly active and interesting to watch
  • Excellent cleanup crew for biofilm, leftover food, and soft algae
  • Great for nano tanks and peaceful community aquariums
  • Can reproduce readily in the right setup

Temperament & Behavior

Fire Red Cherry Shrimp are peaceful, active shrimp that spend most of their time grazing on surfaces throughout the aquarium. They do best in well-established tanks with plenty of cover, stable water conditions, and low predation pressure. In the right setup, they are constantly visible and add movement throughout the tank.

They do best in tanks with:

  • Live plants, mosses, and cover
  • Stable water quality and temperature
  • Gentle filtration and flow
  • Plenty of surfaces for grazing
  • Established biofilm in the aquarium

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Nano setup: 5 gallons+ recommended
  • Small colony: 10 gallons+ preferred
  • Larger colonies: bigger tanks strongly recommended for population growth and stability

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 68–78°F
  • Many hobbyists keep them around 70–76°F
  • Stability is more important than chasing an exact number

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful fish and invertebrates that will not harass or eat shrimp. Keep in mind that baby shrimp are much more vulnerable than adults.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Small peaceful snails
  • Other peaceful shrimp colony setups
  • Very gentle nano fish in carefully planned aquariums
  • Species-only shrimp tanks are often the safest choice

Avoid:

  • Aggressive fish
  • Large fish
  • Fish that pick constantly at invertebrates
  • Any tank mates likely to prey on baby shrimp

Feeding

Fire Red Cherry Shrimp thrive on a varied diet. While they spend much of their time grazing naturally, supplemental feeding helps support color, breeding, molting, and overall health.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality shrimp foods and pellets
  • Algae wafers in moderation
  • Blanched vegetables occasionally
  • Biofilm and naturally occurring grazing surfaces
