The Ember Tetra is a tiny South American schooling fish with warm orange, amber, and reddish coloration. Its compact size makes it ideal for planted nano aquariums, shrimp displays, and peaceful community tanks.

Their small size should not be mistaken for a desire to live alone. Ember Tetras are social and look best in a substantial group.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Ember Tetras are gentle, social fish. They become bolder in larger groups and when surrounded by plants, floating cover, and other peaceful species. Strong currents or boisterous tankmates can keep them hidden.

Feeding

Food must be appropriately sized for their very small mouths.

Recommended foods:

  • Crushed quality flakes
  • Nano pellets
  • Baby brine shrimp
  • Vinegar eels
  • Daphnia and other small live foods
  • Finely chopped frozen foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Provide plants around the edges, some shaded areas, and gentle-to-moderate filtration. Dark substrate can help display their coloration.

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Other peaceful nano tetras
  • Small rasboras
  • Pygmy Corydoras
  • Kuhli Loaches
  • Otocinclus
  • Peaceful shrimp, although tiny shrimplets may be eaten
  • Small peaceful snails

Avoid:

  • Large or predatory fish
  • Aggressive cichlids
  • Fast, boisterous feeders
  • Powerful unbroken current
  • Keeping fewer than six
