The Congo Tetra is a larger African schooling tetra known for its shimmering blue, green, gold, and violet coloration. Mature males can develop beautifully extended fins and stronger iridescence, while females are usually smaller with shorter fins and more subdued coloration.

Young Congo Tetras can appear relatively silver when newly transported. Their color and fin development improve as they mature and become comfortable in a spacious, well-maintained aquarium.

Why Hobbyists Love Congo Tetras

  • Brilliant rainbow-like iridescence
  • Elegant flowing fins on mature males
  • Larger and more substantial than most community tetras
  • Active schooling behavior
  • Peaceful centerpiece fish for planted community aquariums
  • Coloration continues developing with age

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Congo Tetras are peaceful schooling fish but need adequate space and a proper group. When kept in numbers that are too small, they may become nervous or occasionally nip fins. A larger school distributes attention and produces more natural behavior.

Feeding

Congo Tetras are omnivorous and should receive a varied diet.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality flakes and appropriately sized pellets
  • Frozen or live brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Frozen mysis
  • Small insect-based foods
  • Occasional spirulina-containing foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

Provide open swimming space with plants, driftwood, or other cover around the edges. Moderate flow, high oxygen levels, and stable water quality are preferred.

  • Suggested pH: Approximately 6.0–7.8
  • Soft-to-moderately hard water preferred
  • Carefully acclimated stock may adjust to somewhat harder water
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Peaceful medium-sized tetras
  • Corydoras
  • Peaceful rainbowfish
  • Compatible rasboras
  • Peaceful dwarf cichlids
  • Appropriately sized community catfish

Avoid:

  • Hyper-aggressive cichlids
  • Persistent fin-nipping species
  • Fish small enough to be swallowed
  • Very slow or timid fish that may be overwhelmed at feeding time
  • Keeping fewer than six Congo Tetras
