The Cardinal Tetra is one of the most recognizable freshwater aquarium fish in the world. Its vivid blue stripe and red coloration extend across nearly the entire body, creating a brilliant display when maintained in a proper school.

These Cardinal Tetras are supplier-sourced and tank-raised. Tank-raised fish offer an alternative to wild-collected stock while retaining the classic appearance that has made the species a staple of planted and South American community aquariums.

Cardinals look best against plants, dark substrate, driftwood, and subdued backgrounds. Their color may fade temporarily during shipping but should strengthen after they settle.

Why Hobbyists Love Cardinal Tetras

  • Brilliant red-and-blue coloration
  • Classic South American appearance
  • Peaceful schooling behavior
  • Excellent choice for planted displays

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Cardinal Tetras are social fish that feel safest in groups. Larger schools produce better color, confidence, and natural movement. They are peaceful but may consume eggs, very small fry, or newborn shrimp.

Feeding

Offer small foods that can be eaten easily before reaching the bottom.

Recommended foods:

  • Fine flakes
  • Nano pellets
  • Small tropical granules
  • Baby brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Finely chopped frozen foods
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

A mature aquarium with stable temperature, clean water, plants, and moderate flow is preferred.

  • Suggested pH: Approximately 5.0–7.5
  • Soft-to-moderately hard water preferred
  • Tank-raised stock may adapt to a broader range when acclimated carefully
  • Stability is more important than repeatedly adjusting pH

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

  • Rummynose Tetras
  • Ember Tetras
  • Corydoras
  • Kuhli Loaches
  • Peaceful rasboras
  • Discus
  • Peaceful dwarf cichlids

Avoid:

  • Large predatory fish
  • Aggressive cichlids
  • Persistent fin nippers
  • Unstable or uncycled aquariums
  • Cold-water species
