Red Dragon Guppies bring vivid red coloration, patterned bodies, and flowing fins to the aquarium. Their active swimming and colorful displays make them an attractive choice for planted tanks and peaceful freshwater communities.

Males typically display the strongest coloration and more elaborate fins. Females are generally larger and more subtly colored. Appearance develops with maturity, and individual markings naturally vary.

Animal Data

Temperament & Behavior

Red Dragon Guppies are peaceful, active livebearers that spend much of their time swimming through the upper and middle levels of the aquarium. Males frequently display their colorful fins and court females.

They work well in peaceful community aquariums. In mixed-sex groups, maintain approximately one male for every two to three females to reduce persistent chasing.

Feeding

Red Dragon Guppies are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet of appropriately sized foods.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality tropical flakes and micro pellets
  • Live baby brine shrimp
  • Frozen brine shrimp and daphnia
  • Vegetable-based flakes or small pellets
  • Occasional frozen bloodworms as a supplemental treat

Feed small portions that are consumed promptly. Fry need smaller foods and more frequent, carefully controlled feedings.

Breeding

Guppies are livebearers, giving birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Adults may eat fry, so provide dense plant cover or a separate grow-out aquarium.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They Do Best in Tanks With:

  • Gentle to moderate water movement
  • Live plants and sheltered areas
  • Open swimming space
  • Stable, mineral-rich water
  • A fully cycled filter
  • A secure aquarium lid

Tank Size — Recommended

  • Small group or trio: 10 gallons minimum recommended
  • Community aquarium or breeding colony: 20 gallons or larger preferred
  • Allow additional space as the population grows.

Water Temperature

  • Recommended range: 74–80°F
  • Good everyday target: 76–78°F
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes.

pH & Water Hardness

  • Suggested pH: 7.0–8.0
  • General hardness: Approximately 6–18 dGH
  • Neutral to alkaline, mineral-rich water is preferred.
  • Acclimate gradually when the receiving aquarium differs from their holding water.

Tank Mates — Good Choices

Choose peaceful species with compatible temperature and water requirements.

Suitable options include:

  • Other peaceful guppies
  • Compatible platies
  • Suitable Corydoras species
  • Small, peaceful rasboras
  • Peaceful aquarium snails
  • Adult Neocaridina shrimp, with caution around shrimplets

Avoid

  • Tiger barbs and other persistent fin nippers
  • Aggressive or predatory cichlids
  • Large fish capable of swallowing guppies
  • Bettas that may attack colorful, flowing fins
  • Strong currents that make swimming difficult
