Peacock Gudgeons are small, brilliantly colored freshwater fish from Papua New Guinea. Their pale blue to lavender bodies are decorated with red markings, yellow-edged fins, and a dark spot near the tail resembling an eye.

Despite occasionally being called Peacock Gobies, they are gudgeons belonging to the family Eleotridae. Their peaceful nature, manageable size, and striking coloration make them excellent additions to planted community aquariums.

Why Hobbyists Love Peacock Gudgeons

  • Exceptional blue, red, yellow, and lavender coloration
  • Small enough for planted community aquariums
  • Generally peaceful with appropriate tank mates
  • Interesting cave-spawning behavior
  • Males guard and fan the eggs until they hatch

Temperament & Behavior

Peacock Gudgeons are peaceful, curious fish that spend much of their time exploring plants, wood, and lower areas of the aquarium. Males may defend small caves or spawning tubes, but serious aggression is uncommon when several hiding places are available.

Feeding

These fish are omnivorous micropredators. They often show the strongest response to frozen and live foods, although aquarium-raised fish can learn to accept appropriately sized prepared foods.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality micro pellets
  • Small sinking pellets
  • Frozen baby brine shrimp
  • Frozen daphnia and cyclops
  • Small frozen bloodworms
  • Live baby brine shrimp
  • Finely crushed quality flakes
Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Live plants
  • Driftwood and shaded areas
  • Several small caves or spawning tubes
  • Gentle filtration
  • Low to moderate water movement
  • Fine sand or smooth substrate
  • Stable water around pH 6.5–7.8

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Single pair: 15 gallons minimum
  • Small group: 20-gallon long recommended
  • Planted community: 20–29 gallons or larger

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 72–79°F
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes

Good tank mates may include:

Small peaceful schooling fish:

  • Celestial Pearl Danios
  • Emerald Dwarf Rasboras
  • Chili Rasboras
  • Small Ricefish
  • Forktail Rainbowfish
  • Blue-Eye Rainbowfish

Peaceful bottom dwellers:
