Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii)

Kuhli Loaches are one of the most interesting and underrated bottom-dwelling fish in the hobby. With their eel-like shape, striped patterning, and playful group behavior, they add a unique look and a lot of personality to peaceful community aquariums.

At Legacy Line Aquatics, these fish are raised in a small-scale, care-first setup. My focus is on healthy fish, clean water, proper nutrition, and attentive day-to-day care, so you receive fish I’d be confident keeping in my own fish room.

Why Hobbyists Love Kuhli Loaches

  • Unique eel-like body shape and banded pattern

  • Peaceful, community-safe bottom dwellers

  • Very entertaining group behavior, especially at feeding time

  • Great for planted tanks with natural décor

  • Excellent choice for hobbyists wanting something different than a standard bottom fish

Temperament & Behavior

Kuhli Loaches are peaceful, social fish that do best in groups. They are often shy during the day at first, but become much more active and visible when kept in proper numbers with plenty of cover. They are most active around dusk/evening and during feeding.

They do best in tanks with:

  • Soft sand substrate (preferred)

  • Plenty of hiding areas (driftwood, plants, caves)

  • Gentle flow

  • Stable water quality

  • A secure lid (they can be escape-prone)

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Small group (6+): 20 gallon long recommended

  • Better long-term group setup: 29 gallons+ preferred

  • Larger community setup: 40 gallon breeder+ ideal

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 75–80°F

  • Many hobbyists keep them around 76–78°F

  • A stable temperature is more important than chasing an exact number

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful fish that won’t harass them and won’t outcompete them aggressively at feeding time.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Small rasboras

  • Tetras (peaceful species)

  • Corydoras (in appropriate setups)

  • Dwarf cichlids with compatible temperament

  • Ricefish

  • Peaceful gouramis (larger setups)

Avoid:

  • Aggressive cichlids

  • Large predatory fish

  • Fin-nippers

  • Boisterous bottom fish that constantly bully feeding areas

Feeding

Kuhli Loaches thrive on a varied diet and should be intentionally fed sinking foods. Do not rely on leftover food from the rest of the tank.

Recommended foods:

  • High-quality sinking pellets/wafers

  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms as treats)

  • Live foods (optional, but excellent for conditioning)

  • Crushed foods that sink quickly
