Sewellia lineolata Hillstream Loach (Reticulated Hillstream Loach)

Sewellia lineolata hillstream loaches are one of the most unique freshwater fish you can keep. Their body shape, pattern, and behavior make them stand out immediately, and watching them move across glass, rocks, and hardscape is something most hobbyists never get tired of. They are an awesome species for the right setup and a great choice for hobbyists wanting something different.

At Legacy Line Aquatics, these fish are bred and raised in-house by me in a small-scale, care-first setup. I do not source from mass-production fish farms. My focus is on raising healthy fish with clean water, proper nutrition, and attentive day-to-day care, so you receive fish I’d be confident keeping in my own fish room.

Why Hobbyists Love Sewellia lineolata Hillstream Loaches

  • Extremely unique body shape and pattern

  • Fascinating behavior on glass, rocks, and hardscape

  • Great conversation fish for freshwater tanks

  • Can do well in peaceful community setups with the right flow and oxygenation

  • Excellent choice for hobbyists wanting something uncommon and interesting

Temperament & Behavior

Sewellia lineolata are generally peaceful, but they do best in setups designed around their needs. They prefer high oxygen, clean water, and surfaces to graze and rest on. They may spar with each other over spots, but this is often normal behavior when space and setup are appropriate.

They do best in tanks with:

  • Strong oxygenation

  • Moderate to strong flow (species-appropriate setup)

  • Smooth stones/rocks and hardscape surfaces

  • Clean, stable water

  • Established biofilm/algae growth on surfaces

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • 20 gallon long minimum for a small group in a proper setup

  • 29 gallon+ preferred for more surface area and stability

  • Best kept with attention to flow, oxygenation, and hardscape layout

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 68–75°F

  • Cooler, highly oxygenated water is generally preferred

  • Stability and oxygenation are critical

Tank Mates (Good Choices)

Best tank mates are peaceful species that tolerate cooler, well-oxygenated conditions and won’t harass them.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Peaceful danios (temperature/setup dependent)

  • White cloud mountain minnows (temperature/setup dependent)

  • Other peaceful community fish suited to cooler, oxygen-rich water

  • Snails and other non-aggressive cleanup crew (as appropriate)

Avoid:

  • Aggressive bottom dwellers

  • Large cichlids

  • Warm-water species that require significantly higher temperatures

  • Fish that may bully them off resting/grazing surfaces

Feeding

While they graze on surfaces, they should not be expected to live on “whatever is in the tank.” They do best with regular feeding and a mature setup.

Recommended foods:

  • Quality sinking foods (small wafers/pellets)

  • Repashy-style gel foods (if used)

  • Frozen foods (as accepted)

  • Algae/biofilm support in an established tank
