Temperament & Behavior

Gold Ring Danios are peaceful, active schooling fish that do best in groups of six or more. They spend much of their time swimming throughout the middle and upper portions of the aquarium and display their best color and natural behavior when kept in larger groups. They appreciate planted aquariums with open swimming space and stable water conditions.

Tank Parameters & Tankmates

They do best in tanks with:

  • Stable water quality and temperature
  • Live plants and natural cover
  • Open swimming space
  • Gentle to moderate water flow
  • A secure lid, as they are capable jumpers

Tank Size (Recommended)

  • Small group: 10 gallons minimum
  • Better long-term setup: 20 gallons+ preferred
  • Larger schools or breeding colonies: 20 gallons long or larger

Water Temperature

  • Ideal range: 72–78°F
  • Many hobbyists keep them around 74–76°F
  • Stable temperature is more important than chasing an exact number

Tank Mates

Best tank mates are other peaceful fish that enjoy similar water conditions.

Good tank mates may include:

  • Celestial Pearl Danios
  • Emerald Dwarf Rasboras
  • Longfin White Cloud Mountain Minnows
  • Blue Eye Gertrudae Rainbows
  • Koi Ricefish
  • Corydoras
  • Peaceful shrimp and snails in appropriately planned aquariums

Avoid:

  • Large aggressive fish
  • Fin-nipping species
